Consistency is KEY. Set up a routine for bedtime, snack and homework after school, etc and STICK with it.
Once you say no or that it's time to leave the park, you have to follow through. Don't teach them that sometimes mom or dad doesn't really mean what they say.
Explain but don't aruge. Kids love asking questions and it's good to explain why something is necessary (like brushing teeth before bed), but once the questions turn into arguments, you gotta be the parent.
No screens at the table or in the kids' bedrooms. Period.
Distract babies (little ones to 18 month olds). Discipline toddlers (after 18 months old). Discipline should not be physical or harmful emotionally. I like time ins, different than time outs because the caregiver will sit with the little one to allow for the calm down minute or two.
Get in the habit or reading to them daily. In addition to bedtime.
Don't fret or fight over mealtimes. Kids' tummies are weird and they will go through phases that seem like they might be starving themselves. They're not. Offer healthy foods. Don't cook to order.
Teach consent. No, they don't have to hug that distant family member. But they should learn that doctor's visits are different.
As long as they are safely exploring, let them. Reserve the "no's" for the dangerous activities.
Start with households chores at 2 years old. They will amaze you at what they can do even at this age (wipe the table, help unload the dishwasher, fold towels, etc).
